Lafayette Transportation

Lafayette, Ind., is located in western Indiana 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The greater Lafayette area includes West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University. The population for metropolitan Lafayette is 100,000.

The major transportation artery to the Lafayette area is Interstate 65 which runs from Gary, Ind., part of the Chicago metropolitan area, in a southeasterly direction to Indianapolis. Interstate 95 passes along the eastern edge of Lafayette.

U.S. Highway 52 also passes directly through both West Lafayette and Lafayette, running almost parallel to Interstate 95 in the same southeasterly direction. U.S. Highway 231 runs north to south, beginning in far northwest Indiana. It joins U.S. Highway 52 five miles west of the Lafayette area. The two highways are conjoined until U.S. Highway 231 splits off from U.S. Highway 52 in West Lafayette and continues straight south while U.S. Highway 52 continues on to the southeast.

Lafayette does not have an airport but Indianapolis International Airport is only one hour away by automobile via Interstates 65 and 265. Major airlines American, Delta, Southwest, United and U.S. Airways all serve the Indianapolis airport in addition to Frontier, Air Canada and Vision Airlines, a regional carrier serving eight Midwestern cities.

Passenger train service is available to Lafayette via Amtrak. The train station is at 200 North Second Street in downtown Lafayette near the Wabash River. Two major Amtrak lines provide service to Lafayette. The Cardinal travels three days a week from New York to Chicago. The route travels some of the most scenic countryside in the nation including the horse country of Kentucky and southern Ohio, the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, and the white water river country of West Virginia. Travel is available with a reserved coach seat or sleeper compartments.

Daily service to Lafayette is available on the Hoosier State, a line that runs from Chicago to Indianapolis with reserved coach service.

The metropolitan Lafayette area is also served by CityBus, an extensive public bus system. A special route system serves the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette. CityBus also runs the Wabash trolley system daily in downtown Lafayette and the Purdue campus. A special tour service from the Wabash trolley is available on Saturdays.

Taxi service is available from three taxi cab companies: City Cab, Four Star Taxi and Twin City Taxi.
