Getting Around Milwaukee

In 1846 two towns were combined and incorporated as the city of Milwaukee. Milwaukee is the Algonquin word for "The Good Land." The city is 28th on the list of most populous cities in the United States and the largest city in Wisconsin. The French were the first settlers in the area but the German population and other immigrants helped the city to grow.

Milwaukee is connected to the interstate system by two major interstates. North-South Interstate is 43 and the East-West interstate is 94. The freeways are in good condition and if you don't own a car there are many car rental services available. The airport will have several rental agencies to help you with your car rental needs.

Cabs and shuttle services are available in Milwaukee. If you are not driving, walking or bicycling the cab and shuttles will take you almost anywhere you need to go. It is the fastest way to get around the city. If you are not in a hurry and would like to relax and enjoy the scenery, Milwaukee has a Pedicab Service. These open-air rickshaws are bicycle powered and the most ecologically friendly. The rickshaws operate in downtown Milwaukee, Bay View area, the East Side and Riverwest.

This large and populous city also has a local bus system that will take you to all points in the city. It also features Freeway Flyers that will take you to the outer edges and suburbs and bring you back to downtown. The bus service in Milwaukee is the least expensive way to get around in the city other than walking or riding your bike. The MegaBus service will take you to Chicago for under $6 round trip. It is easily accessible at the Amtrak station.

Train service in Milwaukee is Amtrak. One line goes straight to Chicago from the Intermodal Station in downtown. The Empire Builder Amtrak line will take you through Chicago to other major cities in the Midwest and ultimately will stop in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.

The airport in Milwaukee is named General Mitchell International Airport. This airport will take you to many cities in the United States and many more hubs in smaller cities. International flights can be reached easily by traveling to many of the cities you can fly to from this Airport. One interesting bit of information, the General Mitchell Airport is home to a large used book store. It is not what you normally find in an International airport.
