Norfolk is a city that is located in the southeastern region of Virginia. It is home to over 242,000 people, which makes it the second-largest city in Virginia. It is also home to the Norfolk Naval Base, which is the world's biggest naval base. The Norfolk Naval Base is also the world's biggest military alliance Norfolk was first founded in 1639, but it was not incorporated as an independent city until 1736. Eastern Virginia Medical School is one of the most popular universities in Norfolk. It has received notoriety for the contributions that its researchers have made to the field of reproductive medicine. Norfolk State University is a historically black college and is the fifth largest in the United States. This school has also been recognized for its many liberal arts programs.

Norfolk has played a very important role in United States medicine. The city is home to the V.A. Hospital in Hampton and Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It is also home to the Children's Hospital Kings of Daughters. This is a non-profit hospital that provides medical care for children up to the age of 21. Additionally, the headquarters of Operation Smile are also based in Virginia. Operation Smile is a non-profit organization that helps raise money for children who suffer from cleft lip or cleft palate.
