Getting Around Rockford

Getting to The Rockford Region is easy, especially if you live in Chicago (60 miles from O'Hare), Madison (60 miles) or Milwaukee (80 miles).

The Chicago/Rockford International Airport (known for most of its history as RFD, or the Greater Rockford Airport) serves the region with daily non-stop flights to major U.S. cities in addition to offering seasonal vacation service to international destinations. Current scheduled airlines include United Airlines and Allegiant Air. Festival Airlines, a low-cost, vacation-oriented airline has announced that RFD will be the home of its new hub. Parking at RFD is free!

Chicago O'Hare International Airport, located just 75 east of Rockford on I-90, is the one of the largest airports in the world. Van Galder Bus service offers 17 trips each day to O'Hare. General Mitchell International Airport, located in Milwaukee, WI, Mitchell is a quick 90 minutes from Rockford. Mitchell's 14 airlines offer roughly 230 daily departures (plus 230 daily arrivals). Midway International Airport is located on Chicago's Southwest side, and is approximately 100 minutes from Rockford. Midways 7 airlines offer direct flights to dozens of US cities.

Rockford is at the intersection of Interstate 90 (Northwest Tollway), U.S. Highway 20, and Interstate 39. In 2006 the Illinois Tollway is revamping all toll-collection by incorporating the method of Open Road Tolling using the I-Pass System. This is expected to reduce delays on the highway between Rockford and Chicago.

Passenger rail service is planned for expansion in Illinois and Rockford will likely become a destination. In 2006 governmental leaders proposed extending Metra train service from the western Chicago suburbs to Rockford. Additional passenger service is being considered via Amtrak through the Blackhawk Area Rail Coalition. While service (via Amtrak's Black Hawk) was cut in 1981, trains could begin carrying passengers in and out of Rockford as soon as 2010.

Coach USA (Van Galder Bus Lines) provides 17 shuttles daily between Rockford's major hotels and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and seven shuttles daily between Rockford and Midway Airport. In Rockford, the station is at 7559 Walton St. (just off E. State and Bell School Rd. near I-90). The South Beloit station is at the BP/Amoco Travel Plaza, 15766 Manchester Dr. (I-90 and Rt. 75). Van Galder Amtrak Thruway buses travel to Chicago Union Station four times a day. From Union Station you can connect with Amtrack's national rail system for trains to New York City, Los Angeles, Springfield, St. Louis, Champaign, Carbondale, and hundreds of other destinations.
