Southfield Information

Southfield, Michigan is located in the eastern part of the Great Lakes State in Oakland County. Southfield is considered a suburb of Detroit and has a population of a little over 70,000 people. The suburb of Southfield has a rich history, and is a place with lots for visitors to see and experience.

What is now Southfield was founded in 1817 as a result of a plan from then governor Lewis Cass. The founding residents were settlers from nearby Michigan cities as well as the states of Vermont and New York. The area was given the name Ossewa initially, but just a few weeks later the name Southfield was decided upon instead. In addition to being a commercial and business hub, Southfield has over 780 acres of public park land. Another natural attraction is the River Rouge, the main branch of it runs through Southfield.

Many internationally-known corporations have headquarters in Southfield, including over 500 Fortune 500 companies. Southfield also boasts the Northland Center, which has been around since 1954 and is considered to be one of the first shopping malls in the United States. Two international consulates call Southfield home. Both Macedonia and Iraq's Detroit consulates are located in the suburb.

Another well-known feature of Southfield is the group of golden skyscrapers that make up the Southfield Town Complex. These five skyscrapers are known as the Golden Triangle and are displayed on the marquee of the city. Southfield is also home to eight colleges, three of which are Oakland Community College, the Specs Howard School of Media Art and Lawrence Technological Institute. Southfield's public library is worth a visit, even just for the building's cool architecture. The library has a modern looking tower entrance.

Southfield is very accessible, located close to Detroit and serviced by local bus transportation, as well as regional bus service. The John C. Lodge Freeway runs through the city. The freeway is one of the first major highways to connect an urban area to a suburban area in the United States. Southfield is laid out as a grid, with major streets a mile away from one another.

Visitors to Southfield should also check out Star Theaters which contains about 20 different venues for movies, and usually offers some family friendly options. The Shriners Silver Garden Event Center is another Southfield attraction and contains spectacular views of garden waterfalls and impressive architecture. Southfield is a suburban city with plenty to see and explore.
