The Woodlands Information

The Woodlands, Texas is in the southern portion of the state, about 32 miles north of the Houston metropolitan area. The master-planned community began as a residential Houston suburb, but over the years has attracted several corporations including Chevron Phillips and Baker Hughes. George P. Mitchell, who wanted to provide an alternative to city living, founded the community in 1974. It includes more than 6,000 acres of preserved green space. When the community is completed, the goal is for 8,000 acres to be preserved. The community has also received numerous awards over the last 30 years.

The Woodlands is managed by the Woodlands Corporation. Originally, the community was to be annexed into the city of Houston. However, a bill was introduced in the Texas Legislature in 2007 that allowed the community of more than 93,000 residents to incorporate itself. In 2009, The Woodlands Township was created to provide government services to the community.

The Woodlands is separated into villages or residential neighbors. Each village has access to playgrounds, parks, churches, shopping and schools. Many of the trails within The Woodlands connect to these amenities, encouraging a more green lifestyle. A variety of home prices can be found in each of the villages. Home styles range from brownstones to large estates and lofts, and many of the homes are located near a golf course or lake. Five medical facilities and three emergency care clinics serve the health care needs for residents in the community.

Schools can also be found in The Woodlands. This includes more than 30 pre-schools and childcare centers and even post-secondary opportunities at Long Star College-Montgomery and Lone Star College-University Center. There are also three libraries that families can access. The community lies within three school districts – Conroe Independence School District, Tomball Independent School District and Magnolia Independence School District. There are also six private schools in The Woodlands, which offer families a variety of alternatives to the public schools.

But The Woodlands is more than just a residential area. Within its boundaries are many opportunities for entertainment and dining. This includes several country clubs, golf courses and shopping areas. There are two movie theaters in the area as well as the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, an outdoor venue that seats up to 16,000 people. As far as restaurants go, the options are endless. From fine dining to family-style, The Woodlands features neighborhood eateries in all seven of the village centers.
