Vernon Hills Information

Vernon Hills is a small, residential community in the Lake County Illinois. The village is serves as a retail center for the surrounding villages. The main attractions in Vernon Hills are the Cuneo Museum and Gardens, and the Arbortheater concerts and other celebrations during the summer months.

The land that is now Vernon Hills began as a 200-acre farm in 1851. The area remained little used for much else until the 1950s when a portion of the region was bought for a residential community and a section was turned into a golf course. It was at this time that the name Vernon Hills was assigned to the area. On June 16, 1958, Vernon Hills officially became a village with a population of 123 and 125 residences.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the village was again expanded by the incorporation of Corporate Woods business park, the Centennial Crossing residential development, a section of the Hawthorne-Mellody Farms and some of the neighboring village, Half Day. In addition, more land was added to create the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex in 2000. The village now takes up a total area of 7.6 square miles of which 0.2 square miles is water.

The village has easy access to a number nearby cities and villages through its station on the Metra commuter rail line that provides transportation to and from Antioch and Chicago. There are also a number of bus routes passing through Vernon Hills on the Pace bus line. Milwaukee is one hour away from Vernon Hills, and travelers can arrive from the O'Hare International Airport located 25 miles from the village. The village is located just 3 miles from the I-94 and so is well connected for those arriving by car.

Vernon Hills offers accommodation in four hotels for travelers coming to see attractions in the nearby area. These include the Chicago Botanic Garden, Independence Grove Forest Preserve, Lambs Farm and Tempel Lipizzans. For entertainment, the Mariott's Lincolnshire Resort and Theater is very close by as is the Lake County Museum. Visitors to Six Flags Great America may also find Vernon Hills a reasonable choice for a place to stay.
